Family rescued from Wee Jasper caves

A FATHER and his four sons who became trapped while caving at Wee Jasper have been rescued after the man’s wife raised the alarm.

The 40-year-old man took his sons, aged 15, 13, 11 and nine years, caving and abseiling at the popular recreational spot on Sunday.

Yass Police said the family abseiled down into a cave at midday but soon realised they did not have the appropriate equipment to get themselves back out.

The alarm was raised by the man’s wife at 5.15pm.

Police set up a command post and a local cave guide traversed the cave and rescued the man and boys.

Their condition was assessed by paramedics at the scene and they were cleared without injury.

Black ice causes two minor accidents

Police were called to two minor car accidents on Yass Valley Way yesterday morning.

In the first incident, at about 6.34am, a man driving a ute and towing a trailer lost control of his vehicle and ran off the road.

The driver told police the trailer started rolling while still attached to the ute.

He escaped injury.

In a second incident, another driver skidded on black ice and collided with the railing. She was uninjured but her vehicle required towing.

Firearms summons

A 33-year-old man from Yass has been summonsed to appear before Yass Local Court on firearms charges.

Police were patrolling Comur Street, Yass, when they pulled the man over in his vehicle at 11.05pm on May 2.

They found  a loaded firearm in his car and another unloaded firearm located in vehicle. He told police he had been hunting earlier in the day.

Police seized the guns and charged him with possessing loaded firearm and failing to change his home address on his gun licence.

Drunk driver crashes car

A 38-year-old man has been charged with high-range drink driving after crashing a vehicle on Yass Valley Way recently.

The driver was spotted by an off duty police officer at 3.15am on Saturday. He was uninjured.

A breath test at the scene revealed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.195.

His licence was immediately suspended and he was ordered to appear before Yass Local Court on July 7.

The vehicle required towing.

High range drink driving

A 27-year-old Yass man was charged with drink driving on Meehan Street, Yass.

Police stopped his vehicle at 11.05pm Saturday. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.189.

His licence was suspended immediately and he was ordered to appear before Yass Local Court on August 4.

Interstate car, fuel thief nabbed

A 41-year-old Queensland man was arrested by Yass Police after checks revealed he was driving a stolen rental car.

Authorities saw the silver Hyundai sedan on the Hume Highweay at Bowning at 8am on Sunday. The vehicle had been stolen from AVIS rentals in Queensland.

Further checks revealed the driver had also failed to pay for petrol at Byron Bay, Coolongolook and Goulburn.

He was bailed to appear before Yass Local Court on August 4.

Malicious damage

Police are looking for people who may have information on the vandalism of the female public toilets in Banjo Peterson Park recently.

The facilities were damaged with paint on the walls and floor sometime between 6am on Monday and 9.30am Tuesday.
