IN THE GARDEN

By  Jan Werner

Cold already getting you down?

Let your garden chase away the winter blues.

  • Compost autumn leaves for a great spring mulch
  • It may be cold, but the Yass winds can still dry out your garden.  Don’t forget to check moisture levels and keep the water up (especially pots)
  • Feed spring flowering bulbs with liquid fertiliser once a fortnight
  • Make sure you got all your spring flowering bulbs in the ground – it’s late but they might still flower this spring
  • Prepare for a brilliant spring garden
  • Keep warm outdoors with hardyakka:
    • Plant bare rooted deciduous trees
    • If you are lucky enough to have local rock to use for landscaping grab a crow bar and pop them easily out of the ground after a good soaking rain
    • Get some exercise digging new beds for spring plantings
    • Get some seedlings in: onions, celery, peas and beans
    • Wage war on the white butterfly threatening your brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli
    • Dig in manure to prepare a bed for potatoes
  • Plant pansies, primulas and poppies – they can flower all winter
  • Prune spent foliage and flowers to remove the ‘dead’ look
  • Do a quick weed – with luck they won’t grow again until spring!
  • Enjoy the beauty of frost rather than worrying about what you’ll lose
  • Google making shelters for your favourite frost tender plants
  • Move frost tender plants in pots to sheltered spots
  • Enjoy growing your own veggie the Ges
  • Rug up, grab a tea and a chair and brave the brisk air to dream of new garden ideas
