Lost walkers found 12km from collection point

FROM THE FORCE: Search and rescue teams were called to Wee Jasper on Saturday night after a group of trekkers failed to return from a walk at Fitzpatrick Reserve.

Two families had split into two groups to walk a shorter track at Billy Grace Reserve, or a longer 12.6km track from Fitzpatrick Reserve to the Log Bridge camp ground.

The second group consisted of a 41 year-old man and five children aged between 13 and 15 years.

They set out at 12.20pm and were expected to be finished by 4.30pm, but became lost.

Police were called at 5.50pm and search teams were deployed to two locations nominated with help from the ranger and community members with local knowledge of the area.

The lost group was located 12km past the original collection point; safe, well and in good spirits although tired.

Butchered sheep remnants found on roadway

The remnants of 38 black-faced Dorper sheep, suspected of being stolen, have been found slaughtered on Greenwood Road in Murrumbateman.

The sheep’s heads, innards and wool were left behind and their ear tags had been cut off, possibly to prevent identification.

They were found in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said it appears the flock was butchered for their meat and the remains were dumped illegally.

Drug driving summons

An 18 year-old Yass man has been summonsed to appear before Yass Local Court to answer a charge of driving under the influence of an illicit drug.

Police said the man was stopped in Polding Street at 9.50am for a random drug test during a blitz on July 10. (Read original story here).

Police detected cannabis in his system.

Disqualified driving

A 55 year-old man was detected driving while disqualified after being stopped by Roads and Maritime Service inspectors in Pritchett Street at 10.10pm on Sunday. He will attend Yass Local Court on November 3.

Fine for stealing

A 48 year-old man from Stanmore NSW, was ejected from an XPT train for offensive behaviour at the Yass terminal in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police then fined him $300 when he stole a 600ml flavoured milk from the Yass Service Centre two hours later, at 2.30am.

High-range drink driving 

A 38 year-old Yass man has been charged with high-range drink driving when he was stopped by police at 1.25pm on Thursday, on Yass Valley Way at Yass.

He recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.250.

His licence was automatically suspended and he will appear in court on a date to be fixed.

Negligent driving on Barton Highway

A 19 year-old Galong woman will be fined for negligent driving after incident on the Barton Highway at Jeir near Kaveney’s Road at 5.10pm on Tuesday.

Police said she drove her car into the rear of a BMW motorbike.

The motorbike rider, a 61 year-old man from Jeir, was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor bruises.
