The Recreation Grounds in Murrumbateman are sure to be abuzz this weekend, so much so that I don’t know where to start!

Happy birthday Murrumbateman

This week is a particularly special event, Murrumbateman was first proclaimed a village 130 years ago this month and the Murrumbateman Progress Association and Murrumbateman History Group are going all out to create an event for the community to celebrate.

There’ll be loads of displays like new and old fire engines, World War One Light Horse history, Aboriginal artefacts and basket weaving by Ngunnawal people, archery, antique machinery, cycling and even the local Menshed are joining in!

For the children (and those at heart), there’s fairy floss from the Lions Club, Fairy Nessa is face painting and hosting a puppet show, John Warner will entertain the kids leaving parents time to relax at the tables under the trees and there’s even a free jumping castle!

Murrumbateman Village Market is held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month with around 35 stalls offering local food and wine, art & craft, community fundraisers and the odd site up-cycling old wares and has a distinct village vibe.

Set amongst the 100 year old oaks in the Village Green, local musicians provide the background music, and the excitement and chatter of locals running into each other at this twice-monthly event helps to create the ambience of the day.

Murrumbateman Cricket Club aren’t ones to shy away from the action either so they’ve arranged their annual Greg Laughton Memorial Shield – Young Guns vs Old Dogs cricket match to coincide with the birthday celebrations too. The teams are decided on age, under or over 40’s and it seems this year the Dogs have recruited a few new players by age default.

Starting at 11am, (which will hopefully give the young guns enough of a sleep in and the old dogs enough time stretch up) the game usually winds up in the late afternoon with celebratory drinks over the highway at the Murrumbateman Country Inn.

And, on top of all of that, it’s election day in NSW and we’ve even got you covered there! The polling booth is located in the Recreation Hall so come down for the day and join us!
