Second police chase through Yass

There have been two high-speed police pursuits through Yass Valley in as many weeks.

A 38-year-old man has been refused bail to appear in Goulburn Local Court after leading Yass Highway Patrol on a chase at speeds of up to 150km/h along the Hume Highway on Monday.

Police first tried to stop a white Hyundai Excel near Goulburn about 1pm.

A pursuit ensued after the driver failed to stop, but was called off due to safety concerns shortly after.

The accused allegedly drove into Gunning township and stole a set of number plates and secured them to his car before returning to the highway, travelling south.

Police gave chase again at about 2pm and successfully stopped the car by deploying road spikes near Yass Valley Way.

The driver was arrested about 10km south of Yass.

He was charged under Skye’s Law for causing a police pursuit, driving while consuming alcohol, special-range drink-driving, driving with a cancelled licence, larceny (for stealing the number plates), driving with unauthorised number plates and having an outstanding warrant on another matter.

Police meeting at Murrumbateman

Just two people turned out to meet and greet a team of NSW police who were conducting a community engagement at Murrumbateman on Tuesday, 11am.

Police were eager to hear from the community and to update residents and business owners on the progress of the investigation into the recent spate of break-ins.

Despite the poor turnout, they made the most of their visit and managed to make the lives of the local preschoolers that much brighter, with an impromptu visit to Murrumbateman Early Childcare Centre Association (MECCA).

So yes, that’s what all those sirens were!

Drugs seized from speeding car

A 27-year-old passenger has been charged with breaching bail and drug offences after police stopped the car he was travelling in for speeding.

Police searched the vehicle at 6.15am on Monday after the driver was detected speeding on the Hume Highway at Bookham.

A white powdered substance was found and sent for analysis.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are searching for a motorist depicted on CCTV footage who failed to pay for $44 worth of petrol at the Yass Service Centre at 6pm Monday.

Suspended driver

A 22-year-old man has been charged with driving with a suspended licence.

Police stopped the driver at 2.55pm on Sunday in O’Brien Street, Yass.

He will appear before Yass Local Court on June 2.

P-plater fined

A 17-year-old provisional driver was stopped by police for speeding and failing to comply with restrictions of his licence.

He was travelling more than 20km/h over the street limit of 50km/h.

He was fined for both offences.

Business window smashed

The front window of a Yass business was smashed sometime between 6pm April 17 and 7am April 18.

Nothing was stolen from the premises, Premium Building Solutions, at 73 Lead Street.

Anyone with information should contact police.
