JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE: Yass’s own Thomas Carey and Patrick McPhillips have been representing NSW and the ACT (respectively) in the Australian U12 Rugby League Championships in Darwin this week.

Tom came out fast and strong, scoring the opening try on the wing during his first game on Sunday against the favourites, Queensland.

Yass Junior Rugby League said it was a very hard-hitting match, but NSW won 18-12.

On day two NSW faced Western Australia and won 42-0.

Day three was against Victoria, with a 38-6 win.

On Wednesday the teams had the day off and instead had nutritional talks, played wheel-chair basketball and went on a jumping crocodile excursion!

Yesterday was the start of the finals. As NSW finished top of their pool, they played South Australia, who finished bottom of their pool. The coach mixed up the positions, Tom played second row and was able to cross the line twice more with a 56-6 victory.

Today NSW face the top of Pool B – Queensland Invitational. This will be a difficult match and the winner will go into tomorrow’s final.

Patrick, who is representing the ACT in Darwin, has been playing for the Magpies since he started his career in the Under 6’s.

Pat’s team came third in Pool B. They lost against the runner up in Pool A (QLD) yesterday.

They won against Northern Territory this morning and Patrick scored his first try of the tournament. They will play their last game tomorrow.

The weather of “fine and 32 degrees” continues to add to the “tough conditions”, a little different from what Yass is experiencing at the moment!
