Mobile beauty van a district first

CLASSIC YASS: Twenty-year-old Maddi Lansdowne will be one of the stall holders bringing wares to the Classic Yass fold this year.

The young Murrumbateman businesswoman recently threw open her doors to become the first beauty salon on wheels in the whole Yass Valley district.

The eye-catching retro blue caravan has been lovingly restored by Maddi’s family and friends, enabling her to offer a range of beauty treatments to locals ‘on the go’.

Set to become a familiar sight on the roads around the region, her business venture didn’t start out that way, with initial plans to visit customers in their own homes ruled out because of strict NSW skin penetration laws.

“My original plan was for me to come into your home to work, but with NSW skin penetration laws [which cover waxing and tattooing regulations] we had to go through council, and they said it didn’t meet requirements,” she told Scoop.

“So then we thought maybe I could do it from my home, but that voided the whole idea of being a mobile salon. So then we got a caravan.”

Four months later, the caravan has been stripped to the bare bones and now boasts new cupboards, flooring and window sills, as well as purpose-built seating, bench tops and plumbing.

“Business is good, it could probably be better, because there are quite a few beauty salons in Yass already and we are all fighting for the same demand. But in the end, people will come to who they like best,” she said.
“I am the first licensed mobile beauty salon in Yass Valley, which is pretty awesome!

“I think what makes me stand out is my caravan – it draws a lot of attention.”

Maddi will be set up at Classic Yass at a location yet to be fixed. She will be offering “mini treatments” and gift certificates for festival goers.
