Easter double demerits start at midnight on Wednesday April 1 and will continue until midnight on Monday April 6. Please drive safely over the Easter break.

Men fined for drunken abuse

A group of bar patrons were seen yelling abuse and “shoving” each other after leaving a licensed premises in Yass at 2.15am on March 22.

Police said witnesses saw an 18-year-old man and a 24-year-old man “staring at each other and yelling abuse and then [they] began pushing and shoving each other,” they said.

Police were called to the scene on the corner of Comur and Lead Streets, where witnesses had kept the men separated until help arrived.

During talks with police the men again began pushing each other and became argumentative.

“The 18-year-old male became extremely argumentative with police and continued to use offensive language despite warnings.

“Police informed him he would be receiving an offensive language infringement notice. The male continued to be aggressive and argue with police. Police then issued [him] with a move-on direction. Less than five minutes later the male was seen standing outside the hotel again.”

He was fined for offensive behaviour, offensive language and failing to comply.

The other man was fined for offensive behaviour.

High range drink driver

A 54-year-old man was charged with high-range drink driving on Cullerin Road at Gunning.

Police stopped the driver of a silver Mitsubishi Triton at 8.20am on Saturday.

He recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.181.

His licence was suspended immediately and he was ordered to appear before court on a date to be fixed.

Burglary at Golf Club

Police have reported a break and enter at the Yass Golf Club sometime between March 23 and 29.

An amount of fuel was stolen in three jerry cans stored in a shipping container.

Police seek person of interest 

Yass police are keen to speak to a man aged about 30-years-old who is depicted on closed-circuit television footage about the same time an Irvine Street bottle shop was shoplifted.

This man is described as having medium build, Caucasian with a BJ tattoo on his cheek, and he was wearing a red flannelette shirt and khaki-coloured cargo shorts and black ‘Unit’ cap at the time of the incident.

Chamber Cellars reported two cans of alcoholic pre-mix drinks Woodstock and Cougar and Cola were taken from the shop at about 5.05pm on Saturday.

Anyone with information should contact police.

Fire in tree at Riverbank Park

A small fire at Riverbank Park has destroyed a mature tree. Fire crews and police were alerted at 11.45pm on Friday night. Nothing else was damaged.

Aussie Hotel fire

A bucket of oily rags is to blame for a small fire at the Aussie Hotel in Yass last Tuesday.

Police said the bucket had been sitting on a dining table in the rear dining room when it caught alight at about 12.20am.

The bucket burnt through the table and a chair, and damaged the flooring.

A guest alerted authorities.

A 23-year-old woman was charged with drink driving on Yass Valley Way near Yass.

Police stopped her white Hyundai I20 with ACT registration plates at about 10.10am on Sunday. Her breath analysis indicated a blood alcohol level of 0.077.

She was charged with low range drink driving and will appear before Yass Local Court on a date to be fixed.

Gunning meet and greet

Next Wednesday police from the Hume Local Area Command will be conducting a community engagement in Gunning.
