Drug driving crackdown
EIGHT motorists have been caught driving under the influence of illicit drugs as part of a police crackdown conducted around Yass today.
Final figures of the number of motorists who were pulled over for the random drug and alcohol testing operation are yet to be collated.
However, eight drivers tested positive to driving with levels of either methamphetamine or cannabis in their systems.
There were no drink drivers detected during the operation.
The results will be forwarded to Sydney laboratories for further testing to determine whether the amount of drugs in the bloodstream would have affected the driver’s capabilities on the road.
Further action would then be taken against offending drivers, police told Scoop.
Officers from the Goulburn and Yass Highway Patrols and Yass general duties police carried out the day-long operation using the relatively new roadside DRAGER drug testing device.
Six of the motorists who returned a positive result at the roadside test were immediately banned from driving for 24 hours.
A seventh was already suspended from driving and has been charged with driving while suspended.
The eighth driver did not receive an automatic suspension.
