Clean Up Australia in the valley

It is that time of year again, when residents of Yass Valley are asked to take a look around our local area – our streets, parks, sporting grounds, beaches, bushland and waterways.

Clean Up Australia Day is here again and will take place at eight registered clean-up sites across the Yass Valley on Sunday, March 6 2016.

“Clean Up Australia Day is Australia’s largest community participation event and has been held consecutively for 26 years,” said Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey.

“Yass Valley Council will again be supporting this fantastic community event by collecting rubbish from many registered clean-up sites around Yass Valley.

“There are two great things about Yass Valley which come together on Clean Up Australia Day – getting out on clean up day to enhance our amazing environment and getting to know some of our wonderful community at the same time,” said Yass Valley Councillor Jasmin Jones.

“Even little hands can make a difference and my children will once again be with me as we take part down by the river. I encourage everyone to pop down for an hour or two at any of the registered sites.”

The “Yass Kayak Crusaders” will be back on Yass River and are inviting all keen kayakers to bring their kayaks down to the boat ramp below Joe O’Connor Park to assist with a river clean up.

“It has been a couple of years since the Yass Kayak Crusaders have been involved in Clean Up Australia Day, so we are excited to have a group organised for Sunday and look forward to playing our part in cleaning up our local waterway,” said site coordinator John Franklin.

“We always find some pretty interesting rubbish in the river – tyres, fridges, a hot water system! But most of all it is plastic bottles that wash down the drains around town and end up in our river system.

“As with all the registered sites the more volunteers who get involved the more rubbish we will collect and we will all play our part in keeping the Yass Valley clean and beautiful,” said John.

“We welcome any keen kayakers to join us on the river from 9:00am on Sunday. They just need to bring their own kayak, life jacket and sense of fun.”

Over the last 26 years volunteers have donated more than 29.8 million hours towards caring for the environment through Clean Up Australia Day, removing the equivalent of 315,776 ute loads of rubbish from 158,809 sites across the country.

Come on Yass Valley, 2016 is your chance to get involved and join the hundreds of thousands of volunteers nationally who will clean up their local community.

• Wee Jasper (140 Coodravale Road, 10am-12pm)
• Yass Riverbank Park (Yass River, 9am-11am)
