High fashion at the Picnic Races
YASS PICNIC RACES: The weather could not have been brighter for the annual Yass Picnic Races on Saturday.
The six-race meeting had $18,000 prize money and trophies up for grabs, and didn’t disappoint, with a good crowd in attendance, a feast for the eyes in the fashion stakes and between three and five starters competing in each race.
There were five categories for the Fashions On the Field event this year; with prizes for the best dressed lady, man, couple, junior and hat. Results were unavailable at the time of press.
The first race kicked off at 12.30pm with the Miller’s Pharmacy Maiden Plate (1200m) won by Uncle Ralph, trained by Peter Kirby and ridden by Michael Gray.
Race two was the Waldren and Walker Trophy Handicap (1100m) won by Maximoo, trained by Kylie Kennedy with Ricky Blewitt in the saddle.
Race three was the Landmark Yass Class B Handicap (1200m) and Zulekha (NZ) took first place, trained by Joe Cleary and with Ricky Blewitt again in the saddle.
The fourth race at 3pm was the Elders Yass EJ Merryman [sic] Ravensworth Cup Trophy Handicap (1400m). Sergeant Bilko, ridden by Ricky Blewitt and trained by Mark Cummins, was the winner on the day.
Race five was the Delta Agribusiness Class B Handicap (900m), with three starters after Mama’s Luck was scratched. Living Fire won the event, trained by Mark Cummins and ridden again by Ricky Blewitt.
The final race of the day attracted four competitors in the Yass Golf Club / Patrick’s Butchery Maiden Plate (900m). My Last Waratah crossed the finish line first, trained by Caitlin Cox and ridden by female jockey Annelise King.
