BREAKING: Yass police have shot at offenders who attempted to hijack another motorist at gunpoint at the Yass Caltex Service Centre during a pursuit.

Two men were arrested at the scene and are in police custody.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Police were called to the Hume Highway at Gundagai at about 2am this morning following reports of a break and enter on a business.

Police pursued the men in a four-wheel-drive ute to Yass. Police said a number of shots were fired from the offenders during the pursuit.

About 3.40am, the men stopped at the service centre and allegedly forced the driver of a silver Ford Falcon out of his vehicle at gun point.

Both men, who were 23 years-old and from the ACT, were arrested and are now in the holding cells Yass Police Station.

At least one firearm has been seized for forensic examination.

Scoop has learned early reports from a bystander suggest the ute entered the service centre on its rims and with its tyres blown out.

It is believed police tyre spikes had been used at another location.

The bystander said a man got out of the ute in front of the bowsers and tried to steal a car from another motorist while firing his weapon, and police returned fire.

Police have cordoned off a large area surrounding a ute to search for bullets fired during the incident.

An independent critical incident team from Monaro Local Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm during the arrests.

That investigation will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
