YASSarts: On the back of a sell-out national tour and Helpmann award nomination, Mikelangelo returns to Yass with CAVE-WAITS-COHEN, his triumphant one-man show in which he takes on three of the great poets of popular music – Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.
The performer plans to pay tribute to YASSarts and Oddfellows Hall founder Kim Nelson, who died suddenly on Wednesday night.
Having toured the world to great acclaim from the Sydney Opera House to London’s West End, Mikelangelo is one of Australia’s rising stars. Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen stole his heart and soul as a young man, and now he delivers a stunningly original homage to these men who set him on his musical path.
A highly entertaining and engaging personality, Mikelangelo brings together a brilliant collection of songs, sprinkling them with personal stories and illuminating anecdotes. He truly makes these songs his own with his remarkable baritone and beautiful guitar playing.
The show has been deftly directed by Mikelangelo’s ongoing collaborator Clare St Clare, who has helped him to weave the show into a beautifully balanced and deeply affecting piece, laced with humour and high emotion.
Mikelangelo has won multiple international music and performing arts awards and has recently been nominated for a Helpmann award for Best Original Score (Masquerade) and for Best Male Artist at The Age Music Victoria Awards alongside such luminaries as Paul Kelly, Archie Roach andGoyte.
